Benefits of Energy Efficient Washing Machines

Consumers today are looking for ways to save on their expenses for homeware. One way in which to save on household expenses is to replace appliances with more energy efficient models. Washing machines consume a great deal of water and energy to operate. Using hot water can increase these costs greatly, as 90% of the total energy used will go just to heat the water. As a result, many consumers are not opting for energy efficient models or washing machines. Not only can this help lower your bills, but it is also more environmentally responsible as it conserves natural resources.

For a long time, top loading washing machines have been the most popular choice. However, these are definitely not the friendliest models for your wallet as well as the environment. Front loading washing machines are the better choice and are gaining in popularity. These machines have an overall larger capacity. What this translates into for the consumer is the need to do less loads of laundry. This saves in the electricity needed to run the washing machine. Also, less water is used for laundering the clothes. If you do use hot water, you will also save on the energy needed to heat the water. Another bonus to front loading washing machines is their high speed spin cycle. This was designed to remove even more water from the laundry. Therefore, less energy is needed to dry the clothes.

Another feature that many energy efficient washing machines offer is a load auto-sensor. Traditional washing machines have a dial that allows you to set what kind of load you are running. For instance, you might turn it to either small, medium or large. This will tell the washer how much water to put into the machine. However, some people forget to change it or simply leave it on large. This is a waste of energy and resources. Energy efficient machines have a special sensor that automatically detects the size of the load. The sensors then tell the machine what kind of load is in the machine and pumps in the appropriate level of water.

When you are in the market for new bedroom furniture, you might consider organic furniture as a healthy, eco friendly choice. Organic furniture is made with untreated wood products free of harsh chemicals. Even moreso, the production of this type of furniture is made with sustainability in mind. For peace of mind and to do your part for the environment, organic furniture may be for you.

Eco friendly style does not mean lack of style. With a rising popularity of eco conscious goods and materials, you will find most stores will supply organic products – particularly high quality stores. Though, as with most things organic, putting the label “organic” on anything raises the price. If you shop around as a savvy consumer, you will find variety enough to make the best decisions.

If buying new organic bedroom furniture isn’t in your budget, you could go the recycle route and choose older wood furniture. If this is choice, then select solid all-wood materials such as maple, walnut and pine. While older wood products will have been treated with chemicals, your conscience (and your pocketbook) may be eased by reusing old products versus bying new.

Whether you need custom adjustable beds or bunk beds for your child’s room, going organic doesn’t have to take a bite out of your budget. If you shop wisely and do your homework, you can make eco friendly choices to lessen your carbon footprint on the world.

Biofuels – Renewable Energy

Corn fieldBiofuels have been produced for many years now – and are becoming more widely used than ever before. With several options in hybrid cars that can run on biofuel becoming available, using clean, green, biofuel use is definitely on the rise. Though it may take a while for the masses to move from the new, expensive hybrids that are biofuel capable.

Being a renewable energy option for transportation, biofuel creation – and consumption – will only increase in the coming decades. As trees and plants that create oil are the type of crop used to create biofuels, it is very realistic to consider the future of fuel will not mean dependancy on delivery from other countries. Unlike petroleum oil, biofuel can be produced anywhere the environment can support farming. Also unlike fossil fuels, producing biofuel such as ethanol is sustainable and doesn’t take thousands of years to produce.

Biofuel creation isn’t exactly carbon print innocent – fossil fuel is still used in some part of the process. Nor is ethanol fuel free from CO2 omission. However, as biofuels are made from plants and trees that require CO2 to grow, the use of biofuel does not add Co2 to the environment. Instead, it recycles Co2 that was already there – unlike fossil fuel use that releases C02 that was stored in the earth. And this will decrease the creation of greenhouse gas, something everyone wants.

Silicone Bakeware – Eco Friendly and Safe

silicon-bakewareMy husband and I are looking to buy a home this spring. Part of the “plan” is to use some extra money to invest in a few needful things – and get rid of the old stuff I just don’t use anymore. One of those needful things will include some non-stick cookware and oven gloves of all things. My husband always manages to scorch the oven gloves somehow. Can’t have old stuff in my new kitchen can I? He won’t be able to scorch these gloves! See the video below.

My teeny apartment kitchen has some pretty meager storage, so I’ve simply gone without a lot of the usual kitchen gadgets. The same goes with cooking at home! I haven’t cooked any major family dinners in several years now. With the new kitchen this spring, that will change – finally.

So I look forward to doing some baking. I am really excited about the kinds of silicone bakeware there is out there now. You may not have heard of silicone bakeware before, but it’s been around for about a decade already! I recall seeing them before but was skeptical. Don’t let the flimsy look of these products scare you. They are sturdy enough to keep their shape no matter what temperature you put them in (up to 428 or so to below 25 degrees celsius). Best of all, a simple and gentle twist and your food pops right – no fuss! Cleanup is a breeze. A quick wash under warm water and they are ready to use again. Storing these products is easy! They stack and fit pretty much anywhere due to their flexibility.

DIY Green Cleaning Solutions

green-cleaning-productsTo avoid chemicals in the home, it is important to use cleaning solutions which contain little or no chemicals. Did you know that most of these cleaning solutions can be made using products that you have in your own home? From three products that are found in the majority of kitchens, cleaning products can be created that allow you to clean any room in your home with ease, and without the harmful chemicals being ingested by your family.

Vinegar is one of the most natural all purpose cleaners. It can be used to clean anything in your home from counter surfaces and within the home. Many people are unaware that vinegar can be used as a natural fabric softener. Adding half a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of the laundry will act as a natural fabric softener – without the scent! Many people are weary of the vinegar, as it has a strong scent, but it cannot be detected within the smell of the clothing or laundry. Vinegar is also effective in breaking down the laundry detergent efficiently, causing less buildup within the clothing that is being washed.

When cleaning the bathroom with vinegar, the vinegar can be combined with water to create a powerful cleaning solution. Mix half and half within a spray bottle to create a powerful cleaning solution. Undiluted vinegar is used within the toilet to get rid of stains that may come within the bowl.

Lemon juice is strong and has the ability to dissolve the stains that come with hard water. When cleaning with lemon juice, the natural power can be seen when trying to remove stains from walls and other surfaces. The acidic nature can be used to clean and scent the garbage disposable. Lemon peels can be used to grind the disposal while adding a natural and clean scent throughout the system.

Lemon juice combined with baking soda can be used to wash dishes. You would be surprised at the stains that this can remove. When you cut the lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the lemon it can provide a natural sponge for the dishes to be cleaned with. Not only will this result in shinier dishes without the buildup of soap, but it can also provide a clean scent for the dishes without the chemicals that come with other cleaners. This is important to avoid, especially on surfaces that we eat from on a daily basis.

Baking soda not only works as a great deodorizer but can be used to create a powerful agent that scrubs the dishes, surfaces and other types of cleaning jobs that require an abrasive cleaner. Baking soda can be combined with lemon and other citrus juices to make cleaners. Creating a paste with the cleaners to be applied with a brush will allow the cracks and crevices to become clean. There are many things that can be done with baking soda, from deodorizers within closets and fridges to creating abrasive cleaners. Using these natural cleaning methods will allow the home to be truly clean!
