Though, as with most things organic, putting the label “organic” on anything raises the price. If you shop around as a savvy consumer, you will find variety enough to make the best decisions.

If this is choice, then select solid all-wood materials such as maple, walnut and pine. While older wood products will have been treated with chemicals, your conscience (and your pocketbook) may be eased by reusing old products versus bying new.

Being a renewable energy option for transportation, biofuel creation – and consumption – will only increase in the coming decades. Also unlike fossil fuels, producing biofuel such as ethanol is sustainable and doesn’t take thousands of years to produce.

Biofuel creation isn’t exactly carbon print innocent – fossil fuel is still used in some part of the process. Nor is ethanol fuel free from CO2 omission. Instead, it recycles Co2 that was already there – unlike fossil fuel use that releases C02 that was stored in the earth. And this will decrease the creation of greenhouse gas, something everyone wants.

My teeny apartment kitchen has some pretty meager storage, so I’ve simply gone without a lot of the usual kitchen gadgets. The same goes with cooking at home! I haven’t cooked any major family dinners in several years now. With the new kitchen this spring, that will change – finally.

So I look forward to doing some baking. I am really excited about the kinds of silicone bakeware there is out there now. You may not have heard of silicone bakeware before, but it’s been around for about a decade already! I recall seeing them before but was skeptical. Vinegar is one of the most natural all purpose cleaners. It can be used to clean anything in your home from counter surfaces and within the home. Adding half a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle of the laundry will act as a natural fabric softener – without the scent! Many people are weary of the vinegar, as it has a strong scent, but it cannot be detected within the smell of the clothing or laundry. Vinegar is also effective in breaking down the laundry detergent efficiently, causing less buildup within the clothing that is being washed.

When cleaning the bathroom with vinegar, the vinegar can be combined with water to create a powerful cleaning solution. Mix half and half within a spray bottle to create a powerful cleaning solution. Undiluted vinegar is used within the toilet to get rid of stains that may come within the bowl.

Lemon juice is strong and has the ability to dissolve the stains that come with hard water. When cleaning with lemon juice, the natural power can be seen when trying to remove stains from walls and other surfaces. The acidic nature can be used to clean and scent the garbage disposable. Lemon peels can be used to grind the disposal while adding a natural and clean scent throughout the system.

Lemon juice combined with baking soda can be used to wash dishes. You would be surprised at the stains that this can remove. When you cut the lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the lemon it can provide a natural sponge for the dishes to be cleaned with. Not only will this result in shinier dishes without the buildup of soap, but it can also provide a clean scent for the dishes without the chemicals that come with other cleaners. This is important to avoid, especially on surfaces that we eat from on a daily basis.

Baking soda not only works as a great deodorizer but can be used to create a powerful agent that scrubs the dishes, surfaces and other types of cleaning jobs that require an abrasive cleaner. Baking soda can be combined with lemon and other citrus juices to make cleaners. Creating a paste with the cleaners to be applied with a brush will allow the cracks and crevices to become clean. There are many things that can be done with baking soda, from deodorizers within closets and fridges to creating abrasive cleaners. Using these natural cleaning methods will allow the home to be truly clean!

Essential oils have a myriad of uses around the house, and have the added benefit of the soothing aromatherapy effects they emit. Some of the more popular scents include lavender (calming); lemon or grapefruit (cleaning and refreshing); eucalyptus (revitalizing); and peppermint (energizing). Pick out three or four and begin building your own collection. Some people also like to use pine or fir oils in the colder winter months.

Add 10-20 drops of one or a combination of oils to water in a spray bottle and use as a spray air freshener.

Get some attractive boxes or containers and place a few cotton balls dipped in essential oil in closets and cupboards.

To get rid of smoke or other nasty odors, place about 1/2 cup of vinegar in each dish and place around the room. Another neat trick is to fill your ash trays with cat litter; not only does it put out the cigarette, it helps to absorb the smell.

Stubborn food odors in your garbage disposal can be eliminated by mixing 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup water and freezing in an ice cube tray. Simply grind the cubes in the disposal and flush with cold water.

Microwaves tend to hang onto the residue from the last few uses. Simply heat up two cups of water on high, with two tablespoons of lemon juice and let it sit in the microwave for about ten minutes. Use the same solution to wipe down the walls.

Deodorize a bathroom in record time by lighting a match.

Musty smells can sometimes be difficult to get rid of, but the solution is simple. Spray the area with a mist of straight vodka. The alcohol kills bacteria, but leaves no lingering odor. Borax is also good for mold. Make a paste with water and let it sit for a short time.

Refresh your carpets by adding your favorite essential oil to some baking soda and sprinkle over the rugs. Allow it to sit for an hour or two and vacuum.

Sometimes you’ll notice that after treating an odor, it returns in a few days. This is because you’ve only masked the smell, not dealt with the actual cause. Adding one tablespoon of baking soda to one cup of warm water and spraying will neutralize most odors. For the stubborn smells (like urine), use a natural enzyme-based odor remover that actually destroys the uric acid crystals creating the problem.
