Enjoying a green vacation with family and friends means different things to different people, including everything from purchasing carbon offset certificates to camping out in a tree house in the jungle. If you are in the middle of planning a green vacation, the first thing you need to do is determine how green you want your vacation to be. The following are a few tips to help you in the planning stages and ideas to get you started.

If you are not interested in changing the way you vacation, but are concerned about the negative effects that your vacationing has on the environment, there are several things you can do without having to change your plans. It is possible to purchase carbon offsets at the same time you purchase your plane tickets or vacation package. These offsets will not change any damage that your vacation is going to possibly cause, but they will fund projects and initiatives that are environmentally friendly. Booking a hotel that is still a four star standard, but that was built with sustainable resources and adheres to eco-friendly business practices is easy enough as well.

For those who are interested in vacationing in an entirely green manner, there are lots of things to consider, including the type of vacation to take. Trips to the national parks, campgrounds and water based excursions are great green choices, but you need to be self monitoring at the same time to make sure you curb your waste and impact on the area you are visiting. No matter where your destination is, consider the sustainability of the hotel you decide on, choose transportation that is low impact, and try new and fun activities that allow you to enjoy nature and yourself without harming it. With the shift to green travel, there are a lot of vacation destinations that cater to eco-tourists and make it easy to make plans without having to do a lot of your own searching.

Thousands of organic farms across the world have opened their homes to volunteers – stay with them on their oranic farm for free in exchange for a little bit of manual labor. When you volunteer on organic farms, you help the farm owner in their day-to-day activities in running their farm and you can stay for free. An obvious benifit of this kind of opportunity is eco tourism related for me. Travel the globe and volunteer on organic farms.

The aim of this organization is to help people become aware of how important the relationship between our food and our environment really is. Eco conscious folks tend to be very aware of how naturally grown organic food is for us. But some folks tend to make it only so far as the grocery store and buy only what is readily available. Some of us know there are organic farms locally, but we just don’t go too far out of our comfort zone to discover where they are and what they have to offer.

The various WWOOF sites list various farms and locations across the world. After joining the site for free, you can then browse where you are interested in learning more about the area and contact the farm owner for more information. Whether you are looking for an overseas adventure or just want to know more about organic farms in your own area, it’s an excellent resource for organic food and produce. Just keep in mind that if you want to travel globally, a working Visa may be required – in the USA an American Visa is required.

It’s getting harder to go on holiday these days without feeling a little bit guilty. This guilt is drummed into us when we read the news about how airlines are polluting the atmosphere, helping melt the ice caps. Many of us may feel obliged to go on a camping holiday in the UK as opposed to getting our few weeks away in the Mediterranean sun.

But going on holiday shouldn’t feel like this as chances are you’ll have worked hard all year to earn yourself the much deserved rest. Of course you could just carry on regardless and take a plane to your usual destination but you may be in for a nasty shock as airline prices are gradually rising in response to environmentalists and the government urging passengers to use air travel less by increasing prices.

So what are the alternatives? A wet weekend on a campsite? Well the alternatives include some interesting eco friendly holidays that can not only cut down your contribution to global warming but also contribute to reversing it!

One such destination for this kind of holiday is Sweden, Sweden holidays comprise of many activities that fall under the category of eco-tourism. Activities such as Dog mushing are very popular especially since when you come to a stop there is a good chance you’ll have a perfect view of the Northern Lights; For those people who prefer less frozen climates there is still plenty to do such as many adventure holidays activities like horse trekking and hiking which is very popular in the High Coast region of Sweden which is now a world heritage site recognized by UNESCO.

There are many other eco-tourism holidays where you can help by planting trees or donating some of your time to help with wildlife and biodiversity projects too. It all depends on how much you’d want to do; after all it is a holiday!

If you are interested in any of these activities there are plenty of projects going on worldwide as it is a global problem we face and so if you want to give a little back to the earth then look up these projects and see if you can fit a bit of time towards looking after nature in during your break.ec
