eco-home-retrofittingA lot of attention is paid to new eco-friendly building practices, but what can you do if you have an older home? While you can’t tear down your house and rebuild with sustainable materials, you can take steps to save energy. Natural Resources Canada will provide you with a free assessment to determine your energy usage. With this information, you can take steps to improve the energy efficiency of your home.

The NRCan program is eligible for owners of single family homes and low rise multi-unit residential buildings (as long as they are under three stories). When you make changes in accordance with NRCan’s guidelines, you can receive a grant of up to $5,000. Your grant will be based on how many changes you make to your home or multi-unit property.

Changes can be as simple as adding insulation to your attic to replacing your air conditioning unit with an Energy Star qualified unit. Other changes that are eligible are replacing your hot water heater with an instantaneous gas heater, improving the air tightness in the home, replacing windows with Energy Star qualified models, insulating the room and installing a low flow toilet. For more details on the program and rebates, visit the NRCan website.

This grant can be an additional way to realize money for home improvements or energy efficient changes to your home. If a remortgage or home loan is not something you can or want to do, the NRCan grant may be the perfect thing for you, your family and the environment.
