We’ve all used hand me downs from the parents or other family members at one time or another. But more often than not, the furniture we no longer need or use goes to the street and then to the dump and forgotten. These otherwise good and sturdy useful peices of furniture could be re-used by people who can’t afford new products.

With the internet, it’s a whole lot easier to find someone to come get your used furniture. If you sell it cheap or even give away items via online classifieds or newsletter forums, you aren’t guaranteed to find someone who will take these things off your hands. Instead, you might consider calling a recycling company or agency that deals with furniture specifically.

As the saying goes, one man’s garbage is another’s treasure. And that too can be the case with your used furniture. Recycling furniture is eco friendly.  Even if your peice isn’t antique, it could still be useful for someone else. Many recycling companies will refurbish furniture or use parts to make new peices. You’d be surprised what can be turned into furniture these days.

So the next time you want to get rid of your old sofa, chest of drawers or even a bookcase – instead of tossing it to the street for the garbage, call a recycling company. They will come get the peice for free and take it off your hands to be used for a good cause in someone else’s house.

Environmentally Friendly Renovations – Green Your Home

If you are thinking about renovating your household furniture, why not consider using environmentally friendly furniture? There are so many places you can go to in person or online to find reclaimed, recycled and environmentally friendly products for the home. Redo your home with a “green” flair instead of buying new.

Reclaimed Furniture

Reclaimed furniture can easily fit into modern living rooms. Do a search locally, or online, for furniture stores that create “new” items from old peices. An example might be a side table made from old barn beam timber. Other ideas may be to re-upholster chair cushions and pillows with organic cotton or recycled fabrics.

Sustainable Furniture

If using recycled furniture isn’t your thing, then you may choose to select contemporary modern furniture that is made with sustainable wood. Wood that is grown specifically for wood base products is not exposed to ecologically unsafe chemicals. Such wood is sustainable AND eco friendly, all the better for your green home. Look for wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an organization that has developed sustainable standards for forest management and operates programs that verify adherence to them.

Safe Eco Bedroom Products

If you didn’t know already, traditional mattresses are made with petroleum based fill and soaked with toxic fire retardant chemicals. These mattresses exude formaldehyde as they age – a known carcinogen. When thinking about nj bedroom furniture, consider an eco friendly or organic mattress and stop breathing in toxic chemicals every night.
